International success remains elusive for European music

Breaking into the international market has proven to be a persistent challenge for European musicians. Although the continent boasts a wide array of musical styles and talents, it often faces hurdles in achieving widespread success and visibility on a global scale.

Indeed, European artists have increasingly captivated local audiences, but their presence on the global stage remains limited compared to American musicians. Despite their growing popularity within Europe, these artists still face challenges in making a significant impact abroad.

The International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) recently released its report titled "Music in the EU", which highlights the success of European musicians within their own borders. For example, in Denmark, Sweden, and Finland, 90% of the top 10 songs in 2023 were performed by local artists, with Miley Cyrus being the only non-European in the mix. The trend is also seen in Greece and Hungary, where all top songs are by national artists.

However, this influence does not extend far beyond Europe. While 25 European tracks appeared on the global charts in 2023, the U.S. led with 113. David Guetta was the only European artist to chart in a non-EU country, with Canada.

To ensure European music thrives globally, the IFPI stresses the need for stronger international promotion and support from EU policymakers.
